5/5 ★ – Elesh's review of Unicorn Overlord.

I've struggled to write this review for a few weeks now - its so hard to really give Unicorn Overlord the credit it deserves. Every time I write things about it, I end up feeling like its not really doing anything justice. Everything about this game doesn't sound as good when you talk about it as it actually is. The story is simple, yet charmingly written and full of interesting characters. The gameplay is simple, yet strategic and full of layers you can explore if you wish. The graphics are simple yet fit so well with the game they made. Unicorn Overlord is a masterclass of how simple ingredients can be turned into a truly exceptionnal creation when used right. It is rare that I find myself completely drawn into a game so thoroughly that I find excuses to play, that I shift my day around in order to make more and more time to engage with it. It happens with Legend of Heroes games, it happened with Nier Automata, its happened a few times with FF14... and it happened with Unicorn Overlord. I genuinely could not put this game down. Between streams I'd load it up and do a bit of farming in prep for my next stream, or I'd adjust my team setups. I added extra bonus streams, I abandoned my planned schedule for one marathon stream to play it more, and I ended up running late on nearly every stream I played it. Honestly, Unicorn Overlord exceeded my expectations at every turn. I went in worried whether I'd even like it, and came out of it with my new favourite strategy RPG of all time.
