4.5/5 ★ – Em_SG97's review of Dead by Daylight: Special Edition.

Dead By Daylight is a really interesting game to review. Asymmetrical games have existed before but not as a cat and mouse survival horror game; except for the recent Friday the 13th game. Dead by Daylight is definitely the more intense, skill based game compared to the party-like nature of Friday the 13th. The basic setup of the game is four survivors on a team against one killer. The goal of the survivors is to complete enough generators in the arena to open the exit gates and escape. The killer’s goal is to sacrifice the survivors on special hooks placed in the area before they can escape. Each side gets a variety of characters to play as and perks to use, but I’ve always felt like the killer side had more interesting choices. Each killer has a unique power, ranging from setting traps to catch survivors, to being able to become invisible, to being able throw hatchets. The devs even got the rights to certain famous killers, Like Michael Myers, Pyramid Head, and my personal favorite: the demogorgon. Playing killer funny enough is probably more difficult than playing as a survivor, but I find it incredibly satisfying to pull it off correctly. It feels great to get on a roll of brutalizing survivors and not giving them a second to recover or get any progress on gens. Survivor players at high ranks are merciless though, and they can run you around in circles and completely embarrass you if you don’t play efficiently. The game mechanics are very deep and your skill and knowledge will grow with play time. Survivor to me can vary a little more on how fun it can be, but for the most part it’s still very enjoyable. Compared to the killer, you are much weaker, so you have to rely on quick wits and your teammates to survive the game. Developing good game sense is very important so you can know when is a good time to save a teammate or work on a generator. If you don’t properly work as a team then the killer will shred through you in no time flat. Just like it’s important for killers to catch survivors quickly, it’s equally as important for survivors to prolong getting caught as long as possible. Play time and experience will definitely help you here and eventually you’ll be able to pull of some great jukes on a killer and use your environment to its full potential. The only negatives I have to say are on balancing issues. It can sometimes be really aggravating as killer to play against a team of really good survivors who use top tier perk builds to destroy you as the odds are heavily stacked in their favor; But it is possible through more practice and skill to minimize games like these. The same can happen with a survivor game where the killer focuses on you until you’re dead and it can suck. But most killers do not play like this, and through better play you can avoid this outright. To conclude, this game is a lot of fun. There is always new content coming out to keep things fresh and the devs are constantly expanding and balancing their deep gameplay system to make it the best it can be. The different player choices allow the experience to be what you want and because of that I’ve put hundreds of hours into this game. I look forward to what the game has in store. 9/10
