3/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars: Reforged.
Something felt off whilst I was playing this remaster, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was (besides the atrocious cover art). After I finished I did a bit of research and saw that AI was used in its development, and it all clicked. I’m not 100% sure in what capacity it was used, but it would go some way to explaining why some environments are so dark they’re barely legible, amongst other baffling issues.
It’s a decent way for new fans to experience the original game, but it doesn’t offer so many benefits that would make it the definitive version. There’s no quick save or speed toggles, and the fast exit option is annoying to trigger. The audio quality is also the same as it was in the 90s. It feels somewhat low effort and is probably little more than a cash grab to fund Broken Sword 6, but at the very least it lets you switch between the classic visuals (something all remasters should do) and it’s a better way to play the game than the garbage Directors Cut.
