4/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Heart of Darkness.
The enemies in this game are called The Dark Souls. Miyazaki, you hack!
Eric Chahi has two passions: hating children, and brutal violence. He utilises both to full effect here. While it may be a bit tonally inconsistent, Heart of Darkness is still a wonderful cinematic platformer. It really does feel like an 80s kids adventure flick perfectly translated to the gaming medium. Whilst there is some debate on the subject, it’s commonly accepted that the soundtrack, composed by Bruce Broughton, is the first orchestral score for a game. It is absolutely no slouch and puts to shame a lot of similar OSTs today. Just listen to that final suite! Also there’s a post-credits scene that asks you to put on your paper 3D glasses, just in case there was any doubt it was the 90s.
