3.5/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.

It’s pretty funny that people baulked at the idea of aliens in Crystal Skull for being too silly, yet 9 years earlier in this game Indy was fighting ice golems, giant robots, and, er, an ancient Mesopotamian God. It’s not a particularly high bar, but Infernal Machine is probably my favorite Indy game, prior to playing Great Circle. Sure, it’s an awkward pairing of Tomb Raider and Ocarina of Time (but nowhere near as good as that sounds) but it’s the perfect template for what these games should be. A globe trotting adventure that’s focused on puzzles, exploration, and atmosphere. If it was less frustrating to play I think Infernal Machine would be highly regarded, but it was an N64 platformer with a botched development so it’s a miracle it’s playable at all.
