2.5/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Namco x Capcom.

Man, this was fucking interminable. Whilst Namco x Capcom nails its character interactions, by far its biggest strength, and the battles are a bit more involved than a lot of typical TRPGs, you’re still looking at 50 hours of a gameplay loop that never evolves and a soul crushingly repetitive story. Every mission plays out the exact same way, they just get increasingly longer. As fun as Heihachi hellsweeping a raptor from Dino Crisis whilst fighting alongside Klonoa is, it doesn’t alleviate the tedium. I do like that they gave a lot of focus to the more obscure franchises, especially the forgotten 80s arcade characters. The original characters are neat too, and the ending is surprisingly sweet. I’d like to see more of these characters interacting but I just don’t think I have it in me to play the Project X Zone games. Also it makes me irrationally annoyed that Jin and King have their 4 designs but their themes are from TTT1.
