2.5/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
It’s hard to think of another game that gets so progressively worse to the level of RE7. The first act is certainly the most atmospheric the franchise has been since 0, but it’s all downhill, rapidly, from there. The boat/mines remains one of my least finales of recent memory and puts me off replaying this every time, as well as leaving an extra sour taste after it ends.
Besides all of that, 7 is just inherently flawed. Whilst the attempt to return to the series’ origins is admirable, Capcom don’t fully commit as there’s an uneasy mix of both eras here. Starting your game with a spooky haunted house section to having a chainsaw fight (someone’s a fan of TCM2!) to having your final boss being the giant face of a little old granny that’s cussing you out… how can people call this a horror game?
Also the Molded are a poor man’s Regenerator and they wouldn’t have been as nearly as effective in 4 if they were LITERALLY EVERY ENEMY like they are here.
Most of the DLC also sucks but I won’t lie and say it wasn’t fun punching baddies to death in End of Zoe.
