4.5/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Tekken Tag Tournament.
The classic era goes out not with a bang, but with a tag (and also a bang).
In terms of raw gameplay, TTT1 is as close to perfect as the 90s games get. It’s essentially just Tekken 3 but better. It’s also just insane how good it looks. Sure, some of the faces look off and the background movement isn’t exactly seamless, but this was *2000* (‘99 was the arcade release and looked identical to T3). The stages and music are also great, obviously, and the new costumes are basically the best all of the characters have ever looked.
The only complaints I really have is the lack of new content (Tekken Bowl is fun for a minute, Unknown is just *another* mimic character, and the endings SUCK), the exclusion of music from past games, the poor balancing of the roster (but it’s nice that True Ogre isn’t a pushover for once), and the tag system isn’t particularly fleshed out.
Whilst T3 has the superior arcade mode, endings, bonus content, and, of course, the legacy, if I wanted to play some classic Tekken I’d instantly go to TTT. Whilst that technically puts it at the top of my ranking, in reality I hold them both to an equal standard (and that standard is fucking awesome).
