3/5 ★ – Empyrean's review of Wolfenstein 3D.
Wolfenstein 3D was obviously revolutionary, but unlike DOOM it hasn’t aged particularly well and often feels more like a proof of concept. Some things like the bosses, the impressive AI, and that reliably satisfying id gameplay, are great, but I struggled to get past the atrocious level design (the improvement in DOOM just a year later is astounding), repetitive textures, annoying soundtrack, and lack of weapon and enemy variety over 60 (120 if you include all 3 Spear of Destiny episodes) levels. Not to mention it’s just not particularly polished. Enemies will regularly turn invisible (but still shoot you) if there are too many bodies, and there are several levels where bugs prevent you from getting all items. The best way to play is probably just sticking with the original 30 levels and not worrying about 100%. If you ever decide to play this and are a completionist, do yourself a favor: google the Aardwolf Maze and then uninstall.
