3/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of 11-11: Memories Retold.

11-11 memories retold is a unique game as it is so distinct in its art design, with every scene reminiscent of an oil painting. Set during WW1, your play-through will consist of controlling either Harry, a jumpy Canadian photographer or Kurt, a German engineer enlisting himself onto the front line to locate his missing in battle son Max. I really liked how quickly your control over the main characters changed, keeping things fresh by seeing their war experiences from both perspectives almost simultaneously.
The voice acting is good from the main pair to Captain Barrett, with none other than Elijah Woods voicing Harry. There is also clever game mechanics when writing home to your family. You are presented with multiple choices but also have options that are unlocked depending on what you discover previously. This actively encouraged me to have as many interactions as I could with all of the NPC’s. This decision making mechanic continues into the finale where you will unlock a different ending based on your dialogue choices.
For a game set during the war and featuring action on the front line, the gameplay never really evolves from simple fetch quests. It has a great art design and voice acting, but despite the main focus being the telling of a story, it never really hooked me or had me attached to either protagonist and the lack of action meant the game didn’t fully show me the threat of war.
