3/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of Bendy and the Ink Machine.
4.5hrs
Bendy and the ink machine is essentially a walking sim based horror game with a comic book style artwork similar to what you’d see in Borderlands. You control Henry, a cartoonist who drew artwork for a cartoon in the 1920s era. You’re not given much of an introduction, merely a text box saying your old boss wants you to revisit the workshop decades later and then you’re dropped in.
Although I loved the characters in the game and the environment, I felt the gameplay a bit lacking. Some of the chapters resort to countless fetch quests which get a bit tiring. The horror element was decent, I thought the sound design was amazing to really create a tense atmosphere and in particular fear in chase scenes. The jump scares were actually really well done as well. There’s some minor puzzles which can be fun and some very simple combat in one button melee.
I really wanted to be obsessed with this as I waited for a long time to play it and love the setting, but it just felt a bit lacklustre, the ending in particular felt empty for me. I felt I finished the game with so many more questions than answers, and that was even with making sure I listened to every audio log. There was some backstory of how Bendy originated but was not fully padded on what happened to the rest of the cast and why.
Hopefully the sequel adds a tone more lore to the story and makes this game more complete.
