3.5/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of Outlast: Whistleblower.
Outlast: Whistleblower is a DLC level released to supplement the first instalment in the series. Where the main game began with a freelance investigative journalist receiving a tip off of malpractice at a psychiatric hospital, Whistleblower precedes this by taking the role of the Murkoff Corporation employee exposing the horrors being practiced there.
Fans of the original can expect much of the same gameplay as before, from chase sequences to hiding in lockers and under beds. Movement is more varied and you will often find yourself climbing through air ducts to escape. Also returning is the signature camera that can unlock lore when recording but primarily delivers the iconic green night vision, providing you have the batteries to keep it powered on. There’s plenty of jump scares and with no option to fight back the only option is flight and each threat faced adds suspense.
As it is a DLC, the game length is fairly short around 2-3 hours, although it is not only necessary because it compliments the first game but also because it offers a completely new insight. Level design is varied from the underground labs to the prison, whilst also introducing arguably the most chilling antagonist in the series in “The Groom”. The most memorable part of the game was the final third where you see the practices of this person and it was one of the most disturbing elements of the game.
Overall, Outlast: Whistleblower is a brilliant addition which not only adds lore to the series but also works as a standalone game, even being included with Outlast 1&2 in the “Outlast Trilogy” despite being a DLC. It maintains the same constant feeling of tension and dread with multiple successful jump scares, disturbing scenes and a genuine feeling of helplessness at times.
