4/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie.

King Kong is a first person survival horror that follows the events of the Peter Jackson movie. I loved that Jack black, Adrien Brody, Naomi Watts and the rest of the cast all reprised their voice roles for the game. Jack blacks NPC is hilarious. I would be killing raptors too quick and he’d whine that I didn’t “give him a chance to get it on film” or moan each time I stood in the cameras way. The atmosphere is so fun to explore and I found myself fully immersed in the jungle. I absolutely loved that the place is covered in carcass’s, and you can pick rib bones to use as spears for your melee weapons throughout the game and set them on fire to burn areas you can’t get through. There is a few different gun options that the pilot of your plane air drops you throughout the game, but melee is definitely a more central focus of the combat. You also can’t see how many bullets you have left and have to rely on your character telling you how many magazines you have as back up, which was annoying but also adds to the tension of running out I guess and you can turn it on in options if you prefer. The game does a perfect job of keeping things fresh. Just as you start to think it may get a little repetitive playing as Jack Driscoll, fighting your way through Skull Island against giant bugs and dinosaurs, you switch to third person and you play as non other than KONG! This was an amazing change and it was so fun climbing jungle tops and fighting off T-rex and giant flying dinosaurs. Although I would say the controlling of Kong is a little janky at times when platforming and the combat is essentially button bashing. Peter Jackson’s King Kong was far better than a movie to game of this era ever had to be and playing this after the trash that is PS5 Rise of Kong it’s incredible to see that a 20 year old game is far superior. I think a huge part of this was that Peter Jackson worked closely With Ubisoft to ensure his vision for the game was maintained as this is where a lot of these types fall down.
