2/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of The Simpsons Wrestling.
I recently hunted for this game in the hope that it would play up to the standard I held it at as a kid. I wasn’t naive in thinking a PS1 wrestling game would still hold its salt, but I was let down in what I discovered with it.
Initially, sure it’s fun. You begin a tournament and have to beat everyone in the roster to gain champion status, including a few (at the time) unplayable characters I.e Bumblee Man and Smithers, who you gain upon beating.
Despite each arena being unique to the opponent, the gameplay itself is quite repetitive. Each character has a few moves, usually with 1 or 2 that are supposed to be specific to the character, although typically it still becomes a button bash to win a fight.
This is fine for the most part, but after half a dozen fights it becomes repetitive. After beating the roster, you become champion and unlock a couple of fun mods, particularly playing as Itchy Vs Scratchy.
As it’s a PS1 game it gets less criticism although I feel that when you have the HUGE world that is The Simpsons there is so much more you can do with it. Maybe riff off WWE fight types: tag team, hell in a cell, money in the bank ladder match.
Unfortunately, wasted potential and clearly the goal was to make a quick buck off the franchise name! Would definitely do better with the capabilities of future platforms!
