3.5/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of War Of The Monsters.

Completed with Preytor. War of the monsters has a very simplistic but creative backstory. There is a UFO attack on earth and we strike back to defeat the aliens, however, upon shooting down the aircraft’s the radiation from them seeps into our land and water, turning normal creatures/things into gigantic monsters.. Whose only intention is to apparently destroy their surroundings with their new found size! There is a creative roster of monsters to choose from and after selecting one you will navigate several levels each containing 1 or 2 of these creatures. The design for these levels are okay, but most simply resemble a major city. The combat was generally fine, I got by with mainly repetitive button bashing and long ranged attacks, but I know there was more variety than I probably utilised. As for the graphics they were pretty good for the time, although did suffer from bugs where the camera would rotate and you could see through buildings. One novelty for me was the classic art style of the posters used for each levels loading screen - really gave an old school feel. After completing each level you will gain a certain amount of tokens. These can be spent on new skins for the monsters, or to purchase mini games, of which there are three. I personally thought crush-o-Rama was the best choice here. War of the monsters was more of a new experience than a nostalgic replay for me. I personally found it much more fun than your usual 1v1 fighting campaigns like Tekken as their was more of a free roam to it and the monsters are more fun to control. I would imagine it was pretty unique for its time as well!
