3/5 ★ – Endless_backlog's review of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

Potential spoilers.
Serving as a prequel to The New Order, Old Blood gives the player a chance to play through some of B.J Blazkowicz’s experiences during the war as opposed to after it. Castle Wolfenstein acts as the setting for the opening levels which is a throw back to the older games and was a nice addition that offered an interesting level design. I also really liked the catacombs level as well.
There’s some new gameplay mechanics such as the melee weapon being a pipe that you collect early. This actually has a variety of uses from breaking vulnerable brick walls or splitting in two to climb up walls, pry open doors and zip line.
I personally didn’t enjoy Old Blood as much as I did The New Order and The New Colossus. It felt a bit like a DLC with not a lot of new content to make it stand out. The antagonists weren’t as convincing as Deathshead and Frau Engel and the early levels in particularly were a bit of a chore with so much sneaking involved.
What I did enjoy was the addition of nazi zombies that overheat on permanent death and explode. This meant not only did you have to worry about clearing an area of soldiers, but the ones that you already have took out are still lingering to attack again unless killed with a headshot. Unfortunately, this featured far too late in the game to save it for me when reviewing the game as a whole.
