2.5/5 ★ – Fannfell's review of The Hong Kong Massacre.

Disappointing overall. The game starts off pretty strong and the base gameplay feels really cool, like a more realistic hotline miami, and at first I felt like John Wick. However this feeling only lasted for the first few levels and the game quickly devolved into a difficult and repetitive game. As for the difficulty I found it annoying at how difficult it was despite playing on easy. No matter what difficulty you are playing on, getting hit with a single bullet from any gun is an instant death. This gets old fast. This would make sense on a harder difficulty but it felt a bit cruel on easy. And it felt like a slap in the face when later in the game some enemies have body armour and you don't. This game could really benefit from a body armour system even if it only added one extra hit. The game also doesn't have much variety and it shows what little it has very quickly. You are exposed to all 4 weapons and all 5 or so enemies within the first few levels. because of this the game gets repudiative very quickly. This is compounded by every level having the same objective just in a slightly different maze style building. Also all of the boss fights are structured exactly the same. The story is practically non-existant and has a few plot holes even at its barebones state. If you like the base gameplay and that alone is enough for you then you'll probably like this game but if you need even just a bit more than that I'd pass.
