4/5 ★ – FarnySeals's review of Tekken Tag Tournament.
I was out in the city a couple of weeks ago, and to waste time before getting the bus home I decided to browse the PS2 section of CeX. I rarely ever buy anything from there due to eBay prices usually being better or the stock not being great, but this time a game caught my eye, Tekken Tag Tournament. The cover was cool as hell, with that early 2000s aesthetic black and white image of Kazuya, and considering I’d never played a Tekken game before and the game was cheap and in good condition, I decided to get it there and then. Needless to say, this game might’ve brought my love for fighting games back.
I only really play Netherrealm games when I’m in the mood for a fighting game due to how accessible they are for casual players, but I was really surprised by how intuitive Tekken is. I beat the arcade mode enough times to unlock all the characters, I got the FMV ending for Unknown, and I got 200+ points in Tekken Bowling. There’s still more to unlock, I haven’t gotten all of the arcade mode endings and some of the extra costumes for Armour King and another character, but all things considered, despite being an arcade fighter suited for party gameplay, I didn’t mind the amount of content there was here. I even kept the unlockable characters blind and was surprised by the appearance of Roger the kangaroo, followed by Kazuya, Devil Jin, and True Ogre. All the unlockable characters are great, though there might be 2 too many Jacks if I’m being honest.
I gravitated towards Bryan and kept him as my secondary tag fighter when getting other character’s arcade endings. There’s a decent amount of difficulty settings, all the maps are aesthetically pleasing, and the techno inspired soundtrack kicks ass. All in all, this is a pleasant game to look at if you’re a fan of that early 2000s PS2 style, even down to the kickass FMV opening. There isn’t a ton in terms of single player content, but if I ever get the chance I’d love to boot this up with a buddy over and do some versus matches. I can imagine that the competitive side is a ton of fun and even though I’m a casual player, I more than enjoyed the arcade mode, fucking around with the diverse roster in practice, getting pissed off at Tekken bowling (which is surprisingly depthful), and trying out the survival mode.
Since starting this, I bought Tekken 7 and have been having a blast with that its massive roster alongside friends and randoms that kick my ass and send me back to TTT.
