2.5/5 ★ – Feirsteax's review of RAGE 2.
The thing that keeps this game from being trash is the fun gameplay. It's the game Id Software made before DOOM Eternal and you can definitely feel the DNA in there, a prototype / core of the absolute scorcher of a game they would go on to make.
Most guns feels distinct and powerful on their own, and each one has an alternate fire mode and an overcharge mode which ramps up the firepower significantly.
This allows for some cool gameplay rhythms where you'll be a bit careful at first to build up meter, then rush in and activate overcharge and just go buck wild on a load of enemies. It's great craic and the music really complements this stylish gameplay.
But unfortunately, the open world felt diluted and the level design was pretty dull. Many of the outposts felt interchangeable and boring, and the absolutely huge map is filled with billions of uninteresting sidequests.
Add onto this a generic, boring story with a bog-standard cast of post-apocalyptic clichés and you've got Rage 2. Enjoy 👌
