3.5/5 ★ – Fernofai's review of Among the Sleep - Enhanced Edition.

Among the Sleep is a short surreal horror game with the great premise of playing a Two-year old child. Unfortunately the camera is very well animated to follow the view of the child while walking, standing, crouching or climbing which gave me some kind of Motion Sickness. I guess the very low camera perspective also contributed to this. There was no option in the menus to turn off camera animations and so I experienced the whole few hours with a swimming head. Nevertheless the game kept me motivated to play it until the end and I am very happy having done so. The story starts with your second birthday at which you get a little teddy bear. After you wake up some time at night, you start exploring the seemingly empty house to find the teddy which was taken from you. After finding it, the teddy will accompany you on your adventure. You can hug the bear to emit some light in the partly very dark areas and he also gives you clues about what to do. While the teddy explains everything almost immediately at the start, he lets you puzzle for yourself after getting deeper in the game. Other than I expected, being a Two-year old brings not that much new into the game but the lowered perspective and the fact that you can’t open doors or reach high places without climbing. Plus running for too long makes you faceplant, which is very cute. The levels were straight forward most of the time. You need to find keys, puzzle pieces etc. to collect 4 memories to finish the game. The horror wasn’t as intense as in *adult* horror games like Outlast or Visage (while it was probably also lowered by me being motion sick) but it kept increasing to a pleasantly creeping atmosphere. Much more important noticing that all the horror monsters and stuff join together being one big metaphor bringing the game to a thought-provoking but I guess happy ending. There were a few bugs like a jump scare which could be triggered as often as you would like and in one level I died because a new area would not be loaded but the game autosaves often enough and after short reloading it was there. All in all I can recommend Among the Sleep very much if you are resistant to Motion Sickness. It is fun, easy to play and you can complete it in one evening session.
