It’s more action-packed, and I really mean more. There’s almost no room to breathe, intense sequences and onslaughts of enemies constantly bombard you. Every room you enter, expect to fight for your life. I don’t know if it was the survivalist difficulty or simply the developers cranking up the sheer number of enemies per room, but every fight was intense and full of action. However, as a big action game fan I have to say this shift in direction felt off. Sure, there are still creepy and scary moments, but overall, the game focuses more on constant fighting than horror. Running in circles around a repetitive hotel complex is not as creepy as exploring an alien-infested ship in the middle of space. At times the game reminded me of BioShock, but that’s a good thing because it was something different. Sadly, throughout most of my playthrough, I felt like I was playing a sequel made by a different team who understood what made the first one so great but couldn’t quite nail the same vibe again. This weird, hardly explainable feeling kept interfering with my overall enjoyment; however, in the end, I accepted this as a fun sequel. Yes, Dead Space 2 is different, it feels different and plays differently, but that does not make it a bad game. If anything, this is exactly what a sequel should be. Overall, I think Dead Space 2 could also benefit from a remake because those UI icons are atrocious, and the lighting effects on some sequences are just blinding. Also, the voice acting could use a touch-up; half of the time, Nicole kept blasting my ears off with that inaudible bass-boosted nonsense.
