4.5/5 ★ – FerrumCrow's review of The Quarry.

Played from – to: (2023-04-10 – 2023-04-15) – PC controller. ‣ 9/10 – Nothing a little bite can’t fix. ‣ Thoughts: The Quarry felt like a game where minor decisions changed everything, and major choices decided nothing. The story played out like it was supposed to instead of me paving a path I chose. Yes, the player is in control of what happens to each character, but not as much as is suggested by the given decisions. This felt more like a Telltale game than Detroit Become Human if that makes sense. No matter how careful or smart you are, Ryan will always get stabbed, and Nick will always get infected because the plot says so. To make this comparison logical - in Detroit Become Human the player has every opportunity to avoid losing a character and making them take damage, here, in The Quarry, no matter what path you go down some characters will face inevitable consequences which felt avoidable by given choices. Which by other words means an illusion of choice. And even then, I still felt like my decisions mattered and I successfully guided the characters to relative safety. Therefore, I’m confused, and this is my only complaint. The characters in The Quarry may come off as just another bunch of generic teens, but the way they are portrayed made them feel realistic and interesting. They stutter during conversations, inaudibly talk, and just have normal reactions, not some supped-up version of intense dialogue worth 3 Oscars. I’d call this game more like a movie than a game, but overall, I enjoyed the light QTEs thrown at me to wake me up from getting too comfortable in the cutscenes. All in all, The Quarry is in many ways one of the best make-your-choice horror games out there and easily rivals Until Dawn, I just can’t tell if I still like Until Dawn more. The story was easy to put together, but rather complex for this style of game. However, I found it interesting.
