4.5/5 ★ – Fokathepingvin's review of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.
Truly remarkable that something like this was made under 6 monts.
Seeing Kiryu again, knowing this is his second to last time was bittersweet, but im glad we got a game as good as this for him.
The gameplay here didnt win me over at first, but as i unlocked more skills it startes to grow on me. I still prefer Lost Judgments combat system though. The old Yakuza style is the same style Kiryu uses in Kiwami 2 and 6, which i originally was not a big fan of, since i didnt like it too much in those games, but it is so much more fun here. The new Agent stlye is a good addition, the 4 gadgets that come with it change the usual gameplay loop a fair bit.
This game is a lot shorter, only 5 chapters this time. I intended to max out the game, so when the story made me do side content i wasnt bothered, but i can see why that would annoy other people, who just want to enjoy the story.
By the way, maxing the game out is a lot of fun(minus the weird hostess stuff) and due to the games length it doesnt take too long. The colosseum definetly stands as my favourite side content.
The story itself is gripping and exciting, has lots of amazing performances from all the actors, and also ties into 7 super well.
The final chapter, the final boss, and the final cutscenes are the best stretch in this series easily. The ending left me devastated, in ways a game havent made me in a long time. Accompanying Kiryu’s journey for so many games now, and seeing him like that, broken, scared, lonely, and sobbing is such a hard sight, even now, as im writing this my eyes are getting teary. It is such a masterful scene, and it is acted so so well.
I kind of cant believe that I am almost caught up to this series now.
