3.5/5 ★ – FoofDeckman's review of Megabonk.

Megabonk came out of nowhere for me. Vampire Survivors was such a great game that it seemingly inspired a new subgenre of Rougelikes that I'm just going to call survivorlikes. These survivorlikes are all pretty similar to each other and there's been so many of them since the release of Vampire Survivors 3 years ago. However, I've never really seen one attempt to do it in full 3D which is really what stands this game out among the rest. I know calling Megabonk "Vampire Survivors in 3D" or "Vampire Survivors meets Risk of Rain 2" is oversimplifying it, but there's not really any other ways to describe it. This idea isn't wholly original to begin with and I think everyone who's played this, along with the dev, knows that and just embraces it as part of it's charm. If you like Vampire Survivors, you'll probably like this game too as it plays pretty much the same. There's some technical issues I ran into while playing, one being that enemies can sometimes just spawn in you and kill you, this happened to me twice and yeah maybe it's just a skill issue, but it was annoying enough for me to write it down as a bug. My biggest issue with this game however is the writing, I hate using this word but it does feel a little cringey at points. Whether it be "quirky" typing like spelling Monkey as Monke or Protect as Protecc. It all just reeks of reddit humor, which isn't particularly funny as a grown adult in his twenties, or maybe I'm just being a party pooper. Megabonk at times is unfunny and unoriginal, but it still manages to be a great game regardless. At $10 it's kind of hard not to recommend it, so I'll just leave it at that.
