2.5/5 ★ – FoofDeckman's review of The Plucky Squire.
The Plucky Squire was really disappointing. For a game that looked as different and stylistically fresh as this one, I'm genuinely disappointed with how little I got out of this. I just want to make it clear upfront I didn't finish this game, and I don't plan to, I did manage to get up to Chapter 7 however which is more than halfway through the game and I feel a fair enough distance to still warrant a review. It's very rare for me to start a game I don't end up finishing, but the Plucky Squire managed to grab my attention so little that I just couldn't push myself any further. Its biggest downfall being that it feels like a chore to play making it the antithesis of fun. Every bit of gameplay is uninspired, dull or just flat out boring to experience. The worst thing a game can be is unmemorable and besides it's very beautiful visuals, is just that, unmemorable. I was expecting a lot more with the 2D-3D change but it feels like It either missed the point of its own idea or didn't know how to effectively use it. Instead we get half baked puzzles that a toddler could solve with their eyes closed. I know this is a kids game and I was never expecting a challenge, but with clear inspirations from The Legend of Zelda series I was expecting maybe some kind of head scratcher or some kind of unique mechanic that put everything in place. I didn't get that, which as a result made the whole package feel like a missed opportunity. Disappointed is the main consensus of how this game made me feel, It's not a bad game, just a really dull and unmemorable one, which in my opinion is far worse.
