3/5 ★ – Furyful's review of Sonic Adventure.

BASED OFF OF SONIC AND KNUCKLES CAMPAIGN: *knocks mic* is this thing on? 😅 yeah, GET A LOAD OF THIS! I’m back from my hiatus! Everyone must be thinking: wow, this dude is finally back to reviewing video games! To that I say: close but no cigar. A pal of mine wanted me to play a little game called Sonic Adventure. While I still have four much shorter campaigns to complete, I have a few words to describe my experience with these games thus far. Maybe — and just maybe… when I complete the rest of the story, I will write a follow up review. Give the people two or three more thesises.. thesi? Idk what the plural form of thesis is but maybe it’s kind of like deer — the same thang whether there’s one or many. When booting up this game, you’re exposed to the new found swagger that SEGA acquired taking its IPs into the “next generation of gaming extravaganza™”. The beautiful shade of white really sticks out to me. The purity of Sonic and friends’ ideals against a water demon named Chaos x (the x is a variable because he has different numbers associated with him I won’t spoil why though!) and Dr. Robotnik, slang version Dr. Eggman. The whole premise of this game is that our naughty lil’ blue hedgehog has to stop Doc’s evil plan in taking over the world by using his robots AND the previously mentioned Chaos. Due to this game being originally released on the Dreamcast, SEGA pumps a whole bunch of cutscenes throughout gameplay. They’re rough but charming. Mouths move in unnatural ways, the voice acting is stiff, but it is pretty cute. If I saw this when I was 12, I feel like these cutscenes would stick in my mind similarly to the Hotel Mario ones. As I alluded to previously, you can choose up to 6 characters to play as in this game. All of these characters are directly involved in Sonic’s plight against the three dimensional, Caucasian master manipulator, and take place at different points during the general story. This is a really cool touch! I felt like after playing Sonic’s story, the game felt a bit undercooked, but seeing as there’s 5 additional, shorter campaigns, the effort that the development team took to make this game feel like an “adventure” is evident. One may even say SEGA team was “adventurous”. As for gameplay, the two campaigns I played were alright. Sonic’s 10 levels can be explosive and really creative. Sonic can being snowboarding down a mountain in one instance and then floating in the wind in the next. I feel as though some of these ideas could have been marinated more. For instance, there can be up to three different songs playing on a singular stage at a time. It’s really cool, but I felt like the vibe of a first portion of a stage was never really completed if that makes sense. Despite these stages being fun, there’s a lot of old jank present. Weird camera angles and the like. It’s all good though I like that. There’s also the periodic boss fight in game. Honestly, wasn’t that big of a fan of them. Seeing Chaos’s design change throughout the game was awesome, but a lot of these bosses were just either easy and or not interesting, minus the final boss that was pretty solid. Also, there’s a hub world you can travel from to access the stages. I wasn’t a particular fan of this. I felt like it slowed down the game significantly, plus the long, pardon my French but RETARDED cutscenes being shoved down my throat 24/7 made me disengaged at points: I just wanted to play the levels like Jesus. If I were to replay, I would definitely just play trial instead of doing a fresh run of the story. Separately, Knuckles’ campaign was cool! This was more exploration based. Instead of getting to point A to B, Knuckles is looking for something (I DON’T WANT TO SPOIL WHAT) and you go through a few repeat levels and some new looking for these things. It was a cool change of pace! I already really enjoyed the casino level during the Sonic level for the different vibes and the gambling aspect, but Knuckles’ campaign of actually exploring the campaign was sick. I also liked the Eggman’s ship level where you control the tilt. That was cool. Also, Knuckles climbing is mad clutch. I started Amy’s campaign yesterday but I got a call saying I was hired for an internship so I stopped very early. But I kind of liked how she can bounce with her hammer. Overall, the game is good. Not my cup of tea, but I respect the vision presented. I can see myself going back to Sonic’s campaign in the future in TRIAL MODE. Here’s hoping I finish it soon. Now I’m going to play Sonic Mania because I am in the mood. Au revoir, GG! Ti amo, mj amico! f
