3.5/5 ★ – Geebung's review of Deadlock.
This is by no means a full review, just a first impressions.
The first few hours of Deadlock are confusing but intriguing as you discover new mechanics and skills, and you're trying to learn everything. The artstyle and character design is great, and the sheer number of mechanics to learn is very impressive. More stuff to do cuts down on the downtime in typical MOBAs. This isn't just more items in the world to interact with, but even just the basic, fluid movement mechanics makes travelling from base to lane more enjoyable.
The issue I have with Deadlock is it leaves me with the same taste in my mouth after I play any MOBA - a sense that I've just wasted an hour of my life. It's like waking up from a really stressful nap, you kinda have to get your bearings after finishing, and I can never seem to play games back to back.
As I've gotten older I've realised I much prefer "Drop-in, Drop-out" multiplayer games that don't have heavy time investments or commitments due to long game/round time, penalisations for leaving matches early or rewards that are only available from sticking it out. Once again this is more a by-product of the MOBA genre than Deadlock itself.
I'm going to keep trying out a few more games, but that's my general feeling so far.
REM is so cool. He bounces in his pillow to jump!
