3/5 ★ – Gibbs's review of American McGee's Alice.
A pretty cool take on Alice. Everything is here - a cool world with interesting designs. Creepy details under its strange shell. And a symbolic story to allow the world to express itself. Everything in this game is trying to say something about Alice - from the settings and music, the enemy design, the writing of the NPCs, even her grunts and screams - it’s all in the best most Silent Hill way possible.
I think the simple gameplay works well too. As long as you’re using save states that is - some of these sections are far too difficult to justify playing through the entire level again. I like the whole system around finding weapons as you go, and some were really cool. Although, I wish it forced me to use some of them à la Zelda. Other than that, flesh the weapons out a bit more and add some puzzles and you’ve got a winning formula.
It does everything right, but unfortunately it’s just held back by its age. Very excited for the sequel because a more fleshed out take on this could be wonderful.
