2.5/5 ★ – Giorgos_Alexx's review of Detroit: Become Human.
I have nothing against this genre of almost visual novel games, but since there so little gameplay in them they live or die on visuals and above all storytelling strenght.
Detroit's visuals are mighty impressive but the storytelling is ROUGH to say the least. It's not all bad though, after all I finished all 15 hours so I must have liked something about it. And that something was Connor's story. Heavily inspired by Blade Runner and every buddy cop movie ever made, this part of the game never loses your interest. Both at a character and thematic level the build up and pay off is exciting and rewarding. It makes the lazy QTE game mechanics engaging because you care about building Connor's relationship with Hank and makes you feel his inner struggle between his duty and his growing conscience. It's how a game like this should work.
Problem is that's just 1/3 of the game. The even bigger problem is that the other 2/3 is one of the biggest garbage fires I 've ever witnessed. There's Kara who's only character trait is that she has maternal insticts and this is important because all her lazy "on the run" sequences will lead to a laughable twist that's supposed to be cathartic and emotional. And then there's Marcus who's personality is that he has no personality but becomes the leader of the android uprising because... I guess that's the plot of the game and someone has to. Even the way they sidestep all the juicy implications of androids going sentient would go down a lot easier without making the androids stand-ins for every opressed group of the last century but nope, you gotta get that sweet sweet holocaust callback because it sounds important. I even tried some alt paths after I finished to see if there's any finale that comes close to the pure cringe of the "good ending". There isn't but they certainly tried.
As a whole it's not as bad as I make it out to be, it's more of a colossal waste of potential. Connor still exists and the graphics are indeed top notch, but I'm glad I got the game for free.
