3/5 ★ – Goldenfox96's review of Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered.
I love these Asterix and Obelix games, however this one lacked the charm of the XXL 2 with amusing characters and plot.
What’s great? Running around and bashing boxes full of helmets. I like how the world is set up. It’s open for exploration and is something I really enjoyed. I also think the slide parts of the game were entertaining enough with a little challenge thrown in. It was great to collect the golden laurels, and I enjoyed the variety of scenery throughout. The best part was the ability to switch between retro and modern mode. It was great to flip between at the tap of a button and I really liked how they had some challenges that utilised this function and made the most of it. It really felt like this part of the game was made with a lot of nostalgic love.
What isn’t so great? The glitches for one. Usually I can pass on these, but I ran into them a few times and with the game saving at random times, having to go back when the game froze or I got stuck between some wall, really put a dampener on the fun. You also cannot skip the boring movie scenes and sometimes have to repeat through them if you have to try something again. I also found the challenges too challenging. I’m usually super into these challenges, but the times ones where you had to defeat soldiers for added seconds, just never seemed to work. I also found the fighting mechanics to be subpar, especially when compared to the sequel. It just didn’t flow as well, and I found myself repeating the same tornado combo to get through. Game also felt repetitive with minimal variety of enemies and what not. Never really felt you were advancing or getting stronger.
But the worst thing of all, was the golden laurels in Normandy I couldn’t get. After venturing over the internet I realised I had broken some metal crates which would have helped me obtain this precious collectible. Unfortunately, these crates don’t respawn and there’s no way of getting the laurel other than restarting the game. Usually I love 100 percenting a game but this just disheartened me too much.
It’s a remaster so it’s astounding they didn’t patch simple mistakes known from the original game. Feels like they didn’t honour the game as well as they could have, even with the added retro mode. Still a fun game, but too many negatives to give it the same love I have for its successor.
