5/5 ★ – Goldenfox96's review of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.

My favourite Zelda game. At first it felt so small. Only four temples!? And only so much time to do everything in. You think it wouldn’t take you long, or be repetitive, yet somehow it breaks those expectations and becomes the most complicated, involved, and engaging world you’ll ever traverse in a game. The mechanic of this Zelda game gives you three days to complete everything because in the third day doom will befall Termina and all those who reside there. Unfortunately you won’t be able to stop this from happening. Not once, not twice, but quite a few times, and you’ll have to go back through time and start all over again, watching the world become more and more depressing as you go about the four temples finding what you need to save them all. It is the theme of impending doom that takes this game above all others. The creators ran with it, and every person and creature you talk to in this game has a woeful story to be told. Some you can help but others you can only watch, and even if you can help them, you can’t help them all in the same three day cycle, inevitably leaving some to their doom. In some cycles you make choices that can even directly stop you from helping certain people. You make choices in this game, and it really tears at your heart. This sorrow is felt in all corners of this game. Even the music has this impending tune to it. My favourite place because of the music and atmosphere would have to be Ikana. It’s a ghost town, and it feels so far from life that the world is literally flipped upside down at some point. A big theme here and throughout the game as well, is this idea of dark curses, malevolence hidden away as a result of abuse and abandonment. It’s so intriguing and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. What also makes this game great is the contrast that comes from the pure moments. The heavenly scenes contrasted by the sorrowful story of characters. If only we were kinder to one another. If only someone had been a friend to the skull kid. The gameplay is much like Ocarina of Time which is amazing and intuitive. The more you progress the more you can do. Except this time, you must take note of the world around you and what is happening when. If you do so, you’ll get the chance to help others and obtain masks. Do this, and you can even get the fierce diety mask right at the end making collecting everything worth it. Best game ever!
