4.5/5 ★ – Gridlock007's review of Halo: Combat Evolved.
If you know me, you know I love Halo. Actually love is an understatement. How about I celebrate today’s launch of Halo Infinite with reviewing the game that started it all, Halo: Combat Evolved.
Story: Halo CE’s story isn’t so stellar or mindblowing. That is until you get halfway through the game. I’m not going to spoil, but holy shit this rocks. However, it’ll be overshadowed by the other Halo games in storytelling.
Level design: Back in my day, we didn’t have fancy schmancy slipspace game engines. We had Blam! and some level design. And we had to share the level design. - Sergeant Johnson (if he was a game designer). Now that that’s out of the way, I have some nitpicks about the repetivity of the levels, especially later in the game, which I attribute to reused environments.
Multiplayer: The worst part of CE imo, the spawning sucks. Map design is way too big most of the time. Magnum is way too powerful.
Gameplay: I’m not going to say it aged well, but it still feels really fun. No, I’m not wearing nostalgia glasses, after all, I played it for the first time june of last year. The ai are great by 2001 standards, and vehicular gameplay is great.
Pros:
Story
Level pacing
Blood Gulch
Gameplay
Cons:
Reused environments
