3.5/5 ★ – Harryson32's review of Pikmin 4.
I only played the demo but because it was so long I felt like I have experienced enough of Pikmin 4 to give my early impressions until I actually beat the full game.
First off the opening title screen is just as gorgeous and mystical as ever and I especially love the music. The graphics look beautiful and are a step up from Pikmin 3 deluxe which is saying a lot.
I must say while I am a huge Pikmin fan I have never cared about the plot or characters that much (1&2 are exceptions) and this game was no different. There are so many cutscenes and dialogue in the first hour and a half of the game which slows things down and I got really frustrated. I feel there are better ways to tell story and teach gameplay mechanics than just telling the player and showing them exactly how to do things. I found myself skipping almost every bit of dialogue and every cut scene because they explained simple stuff I already knew and did not add anything to the experience. Honestly the beginning of this game is very tedious but it gets much much better once they set you loose.
Ochi is the new companion who as far as I know is replacing the other playable captains like in Pikmin 3. He's a cool addition to the franchise, he can pretty mich do it all from gathering Pikmin, fight enemys, carry objects, charge and jump. It's neat that he's playable as well. One concern that Iv had though is that he might become a bit too overpowered since he can be upgraded but who knows.
The new ice Pikmin are neat and the new maps are great. Overall it's a Pikmin game so it's gonna be fun but this time it feels like it's geared towards beginners who just entered the series. That's great for them but not as much for veterans.
I'm very excited to pick of the full game and experience all of its glory.
