3/5 ★ – Hayden_O's review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters.

The NES version of Tournament Fighters has great sprite art and sound as usual for this era of Konami, but movement is also shockingly fluid. Given that it’s essentially a two-button de-make of the SNES/Genesis versions, I’m impressed with the number of button inputs and combos this allows- even if I struggled just as much with actually executing them. A lot is fundamentally borrowed from Street Fighter 2, but once again, it’s a miracle that it translates at all. There are only 7 characters here: the Turtles, Casey, Hothead, and Shredder. They vary a bit with stats and moves, but are pretty unbalanced overall, with some choices objectively better than others. Story Mode can be frustrating as a result; unless you’re Raphael, who’s completely broken. There are only 4 stages as well, which have simple, but welcome differences. The SNES version is far more detailed and content-heavy, but this is a neat alternative.
