3/5 ★ – Hello_there's review of Until Dawn.
An unpolished and sauceless remake. The only good things about this remake, are the stuff that stayed the same from the original, the updated graphics, the removal of the “previously on” segments, and added endings. This game mostly kept everything from the original the same (which is a good thing), they didn’t really cut anything, and only added onto it, which is what one should do with a remake. The main things they took out were the opening (I’ll get to that), the music (I’ll also get to that) and the endings. A change I like was the removal of the “previously on” sections. The previously on sections are finally gone, which puts a smile on my face. Now… let’s get to the not so good. A lot of points during this game, the lip syncing between the dialogue, and the lip movement, was pretty bad. This was especially apparent in the opening sequence, during the prank. Another issue is the amount of frame jumps that happen in this game. This game often has frame cuts, where one moment, and character can be doing something, but another moment it’s like they jump cut to a different position. Also, this game got rid of the blue color pallet. The blue color pallet was an intentional choice from the original, that added to the atmosphere, and it just feels different without it. The music is the main thing I see people saying is different, and while I don’t like the remakes music, I still don’t think it’s to distracting. The only time it was distracting to me was in the new opening, but that entire section wasn’t good. When the remake was first coming out, they hyped up this new opening scene, only for it to be just a dragged out version of the prank. It didn’t add anything to the story, it didn’t make me care about the characters anymore, it was just pointless.
Spoilers time
I don’t like the added sections of Hannah getting ready to meet Mike, while they set up the prank. It didn’t do anything for me. However something new I did like were the hunger totems that showed Hannah as a Wendigo.
However something new I did like was being able to finally save Josh. It was something I always wished we could’ve done in the first, and I was really happy to learn it was possible in the remake. There was also another cool ending with present day Sam, that teases an Until Dawn 2 (which excites me)
Spoiler section over
This game is an example of genuinely MID remake. Overall, 6/10
