3/5 ★ – HomeVideoHustle's review of Devil May Cry.
For years, I have been debating on trying out the DMC series. I bought the original on PS2 years back, played it for a while and I’m pretty sure I shelved it. I don’t remember why I didn’t beat it, I think I just got bored.
I bought the HD collection on PS5 and decided to give it another shot. I was shocked when I beat it in one day in four and a half hours. Granted, I didn’t explore a whole lot and never did any secret missions. I guess that sums up my review right there. I liked it enough to beat it but not enough to really explore it and do extra stuff.
I did have fun blasting monsters and slicing them up. I pretty much only used the default weapons the whole game, the pistols and the electric sword. I tried some of the other stuff but nothing was as much fun.
There were times I found myself yelling at the screen though. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have platforming in a fixed camera game and with no way to tell where you were really going to land, was an asshole. So many times I’d jump and think I’m going to make it, only to fall and have to do it over again. I haven’t felt the urge to fling a controller in a while but this one almost got me once with its bullshit platforming.
I think another reason why I got bored the first time is because there is very little story going on. You get a quick intro and then are thrust into a castle and fighting demons. I got excited whenever a cutscene happened, only for most to be nothing special. When I did get some bits of story to bite into, it wasn’t the best but the terrible dialogue and voice work made me laugh a lot in a MST3K kind of way, so that was enjoyable.
I kinda dug the mission layout of the game. Having it be a few big areas but broken up into short bursts was a fun way to do this. Levels could range from being twenty minutes to a minute in a half! That was the only mission I got an S rank on admittedly.
It’s dated, can be annoying, has a weak plot but the gameplay makes up for it…When you aren’t having to platform. I definitely don’t see the hype that others do, yet! I hope I can start to feel it but I hear DMC 2 is terrible. Knowing me, I’m sure I’ll like it better for some reason. That’s how these things usually go.
