2.5/5 ★ – HomeVideoHustle's review of Resident Evil 6.
When this dropped in 2012, I was super hype. I had really just delved head first into the series and at the time of my new fandom, this was the latest release in the series. I ended up really liking it and giving it an 8/10 or 4 stars. 12 years later, I wanted to go through it again and with no hype behind it, I see that this game really is as disappointing as reviewers said back then.
There are really no scares, they doubled down on the action from RE5 and where I still love RE5, this one just feels like a generic action game. The campaign is split into four sections, Leon, Chris, Jake and Ada. The Leon campaign feels the most like a Resident Evil game and I had the most fun with that one. Chris’ campaign was by far the most annoying. Jake’s campaign was fine, it was my second favorite and Ada’s campaign felt pointless.
I started the game on the normal difficulty and was able to finish the Leon story that way. When I got to Chris, that’s when the headaches started. They tried to make this an action game but they also tried to keep the survival horror spirit by giving you minimal ammo. So just imagine playing Call of Duty and running out of ammo. It would suck right? Well, that happened a lot. I’d find myself in rooms with heavy enemies with no ammo drops and when the clip ran dry, I’d have to try and punch zombies, which didn’t usually end well. It’s so fucking frustrating when you break boxes for ammo and you get stupid reward points. Just give me some fucking ammo if you want me to play it like an action game!
I eventually just had to bump the difficulty down because if I didn’t, this was going to be shelved. I don’t have the time or patience that I did back when I was 21 playing this. After that, suddenly I was packed full of ammo and the game became more fun. Funny how being able to shoot in an action game makes things more fun huh?
There were still the occasional headaches where the game would be very vague about what it wanted me to do or wanted me to go and I’d run in circles trying to see what it wanted me to do.
The story is also very weak. With it being split into four, it gets muddled and you repeat sequences multiple times with different characters with little to no changes from before. This made a lot of levels feel like busywork or just tedious. Also making it tedious is how some levels go on and on and on. It felt like some would never end. The pacing is way off.
When I had fun though, I had fun. Shooting feels good. Melee kills are fun and some bits of the story were entertaining. I played it total for 20 hours and honestly, I don’t think I’ll go back for a third time. I know some people feel the same way about Resident Evil 5 but trust me, this is way worse than that one.
