4/5 ★ – IgnacioGG117's review of DOOM: The Dark Ages.
Its undeniable that id has cracked the code on how to translate Doom to a new generation of players. It is the kind of of fist-pumping, jaw-breaking, blood-splattering mayhem that only a few franchises like Doom are capable of. With 2016, they revitalized it, with Eternal, they evolved it and with Dark Ages, they have reimagined it, but is it for the better?.
The addition of the shield is without a doubt one of the best aspects of Dark Ages, long gone are the hooks and jetpack jumps, the Slayer is a tank. It might seem like a downgrade at first but the shield still allows you to rip and tear without mercy, going from one place to another in an instant, you're still FAST. Parrying feels just right, the weapons are all insanely cool looking and the performance is silky smooth. Killing demons has never felt this satisfying.
So, why didnt i love this like the last two?
The padding.
The story cutscenes just feel like padding, no real characters or story to get invested in, they just did it because, well, they didnt do it before.
The dragon and atlan sections are cool at first, but then i wondered what was the point? It slows down the gameplay, and they're not as challenging as the regular combat scenarios, and its not like the dragon is that fun to fly around either, you're basically stuck in these small open spaces, there's no real combat outside of shooting down a few turrets. The Atlan sections just involve you punching the same two types of big demons until you get to your destination, and they're so short, ocassionally you'll get a big ass machine gun, which is fun but, again, just feels like padding.
At the end of the day, i still had a lot of fun with Doom: The Dark Ages, but i believe it proves one thing: If it aint broke, dont fix it.
