3/5 ★ – Ilory's review of Super Mario Sunshine.

I expected more from this game, and I think words can’t describe how infuriating this game was. The game has a lot of positives, like the technical aspects, art style, and the water gameplay stuff is really cool. That’s it for the positives. Now, the cons are many: while I like the art style, I wish there was more variety, because the water theme focus gets boring after the first 2 hours. the levels are way too linear and you do not have the freedom to do the tasks in the same way as you could in Mario 64, whenever you wanted. The stuff you do also is very repetitive, because most of the time you are either clearing stuff, chasing Shadow Mario, or riding Yoshi (which is not used very well, I might say). And the controls. Oh god, the controls. They are so frustrating, especially with the camera issues. They don’t respond correctly and sometimes Mario doesn’t do whatever he wants and it might result in losing the level. I heard this game was rushed, and you can clearly see that. It’s like they dedicated themselves to only doing well in 2 levels (the ship and the beach one), and the rest are copy-pasted of each other with just a different location. Don’t get me wrong, Mario 64 is not per sé not repetitive, but that game had some variety, and the levels were not linear like this game. Honestly, such a shame how this game turned out
