4.5/5 ★ – Imzzzy's review of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Jedi Survivor definitely upgraded from its predecessor in every way, however due to that, the technical aspects did somewhat fail. It wasn't completely unplayable on PS5, but it was a little annoying at times, and I usually never experience the bugs and glitches people experience when a new release drops!
Aside from this misstep, the game delivers a soul crushing story, hand in hand with an equally amazing experience. The cutscenes are *everything*. The growth and further exploration to the characters and lore are exceptionally done. The combat does open up a bit, not in particular move sets or combos, but through stances. Sadly due to the difficulty I was playing on [Jedi Master], I did feel stuck to the one stance that could animation cancel/cancel an attack. This is definitely one thing the game needs, in any stance, at any point of a combo, to cancel that animation, otherwise in higher difficulties you're dead on the spot.
The semi-open world was a great touch too, exploration pretty much rewarded you to further customize your own badass lightsaber. That felt excellent, but I'm not sure why they took away the option to customize the Mantis. Either way, this addition was another genius idea, yet another box ticked for fans of SW. Level design is gorgeous, I loved how much parkour was involved in this, the different puzzles were a surprise too. Sound design along with the soundtrack were impeccable. Hearing your lightsaber effortlessly cut through metal has never been done better.
Overall, a nuanced, emotional and fun game, that really engrossed me in every step of the way. I loved every bit of it, and I'm confident that if a third one drops, it'll comfortably be the best SW trilogy since the OG.
