4/5 ★ – ItsBujy's review of Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.
In the game Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth you take on the role of an Elven fighter know as Deedlit. You wake up in an strange dungeon without any memory of how you ended up there. Throughout this 6-7 hour indie game you will be playing through the dungeon unlocking skills and magic to help you progress your way through multiple obstacles. This game is not afraid to hide that it takes its inspiration from games of the last such as Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
First let’s talk about the story without any spoilers. Like previously stated you will be traversing through an unknown dungeon as Deedlit the elven warrior. She’ll receive access to many different spells, mobility and weapon upgrades as you go. You’ll be taking on the likes of Goblins, zombies, Dragons and even fellow elves and warriors. As you progress Deedlit will slowly regain her memory for the events that took place prior to ending in the Labyrinth. Overall it plays out well and I truly enjoyed it.
I picked this game up on a whim from my local game store. After looking over the box Art I felt as though it would be right up my alley with its “Dungeons and Dragons” appeal. So the first thing that jumps out in Deedlit are it’s stunning graphics. I’m a sucker for amazing 16 bit art that the designers put great time into. Along with the visuals came a limited but awesome sound track. I feel like there was not a ton of variation in the music, however the tracks that played constantly fit the setting and created a great atmosphere for the labyrinth.
Next up is the gameplay. Overall the gameplay was very fluid and had a very tight control. The coolest thing that this game brings to the Metroidvania genre is its magic. You get two different forms of magic (fire/wind) that you constantly change between. This is because the monsters that you face have specific weakness and resistances that makes them immune to one or the other. That goes the same for Deedlit as you can negate damage by switching to the proper magic, similar to a game mechanic like Ikaruga on the GameCube. It’s a high paced bullet hell/Metroidvania crossover.
Finally the conclusion is that I can recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the old style Castlevania games. I truly enjoyed it however it is fairly short as I beat it in 2-3 sittings.
