3.5/5 ★ – ItsBujy's review of Super Mario Galaxy.

In Super Mario Galaxy you are trying to stop bowser from taking over and creating a galaxy the way that he would want it. You’ll go through the multiple galaxies collecting stars, similar to other 3D Mario’s. You’ll be placed in a hub world when not in those specific galaxies, this being a space station run by Rosalina. To start things off I want to clarify that I did play this on the nintendo switch in handheld mode. I was someone who didn’t invest much into the Wii but loved Mario 64 and Sunshine a ton when growing up that I could not pass up the 3D-Allstars collection. First let’s start with the gameplay. The gameplay was awesome for the most part. The controls were tight and creative as most Mario’s are. I also liked that there was the new mechanic of where the perspective of the planet you are on would flip, and turn as if it had its own gravity. This gave the puzzle solving some awesome creative moments. The big thing that I do not think carried over well was the motion controls for handheld play. There were some blue stars you would have to press the touch screen for, and then there was a sting ray and a ball to ride where you would have to tilt and twist your switch. I feel like these could have been just transitioned to the joysticks as it normally would, however I understand that the motion controls were the gimmick of the original game. I’ve played every 3D Mario game besides the Galaxy games, all in all I would say that the gameplay stands up to the Mario standards. I would still prefer Sunshine and Odyssey to this game. Next let’s talk about the visuals. The visuals were beautiful and definitely creative. These worlds are pretty damn cool compared to some of the other games. I would also say that the soundtrack is also very fitting. There were very few times that I disliked what I heard or saw. The only thing that I struggled with at times was trying to figure out the depth of where Mario was. Instead of having a completely controlled camera there is a couple areas where the camera would be locked. This lead to a couple frustrating deaths. Overall I did enjoy my time with Mario Galaxy. I’m not one to go and collect every single star/shinesprite/moon in these games so I was able to finish it in roughly 8 hours. I would recommend checking this game out but would probably rank this on the lower half compared to other 3D Mario’s. Pros: -Cool Worlds to explore -Nice Visuals -Great Bowser Fights Cons: -Locked camera causes frustrating deaths -Motion controls didn’t transition well to handheld switch gameplay
