4.5/5 ★ – Itsgrimsby's review of A Plague Tale: Requiem.
The Plague Tale franchise for me really is 14th century Last of Us. It’s a journey across the country in service of protecting a child and surviving the horrors that lurk around every corner; be they man or creature. It’s also a story about human beings acting like human beings.
Amicia is so very likeable to me because of how flawed she is. She’s certainly very capable in that sort of video game protagonist kind of way, but she also constantly shows the cracks. She’s emotionally led, and often out of her depth and she knows it. Combine that with Hugo, who may be annoying at times, acting like a child and experiencing everything they do as such, and you’ve got yourself a strong narrative window into this world.
The thing I think I care least for in these games is the supernatural element. I think the rats are a great gameplay mechanic, and they make both puzzles and combat interesting, but I’m not sure even now I fully understand all of the black magic that goes on.
Requiem is a well paced game, every chapter brings a new perspective or mechanic to keep things interesting. In the stealth sections this could be a new ally with a different way of getting through enemies, in the exploration sections this could be a new tool or alchemical experiment to change how you interact with the world.
I really enjoyed A Plague Tale: Requiem; and I really hope that this is the end of the series because I’m not sure anything else will measure up to what they’ve done with this one.
