4.5/5 ★ – Itsgrimsby's review of Marvel's Midnight Suns.
Midnight Suns grew on me more and more the longer I played it.
At first I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag; life sim elements mixed with turn based strategy gameplay with a deck building twist, and also there’s this metroidvania type open world kind of going on in the background filled with secrets, AND there’s also actually a really good puzzle game mode hidden in here too in the form of challenges that you don’t unlock until many hours into the game. See, it’s a lot. And it doesn’t all work. The game also has way too many currencies going on that it feels like it takes a lot to finally break through with this game.
All that said; the turn based tactical gameplay is very very good (unsurprisingly from Fireaxis) and it carries the experience for long enough to allow everything else to click. I’d also say that mileage will vary based on how much of a Marvel fan you are. At first it’s a bit off putting seeing these different versions of characters we know and love, but they actually grew on me too like everything else in this game.
I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone because I don’t think it’s an easy sell, but if you like Marvel and have any interest in any of the genres going on in this game, it’s definitely worth a try.
