Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Story
Not much need be said about the story of The Skywalker Saga as to review it would basically be a review of the actual Star Wars nonology. However, one aspect of the story and characters that does differ to the actual films is the comedy. The Skywalker Saga provides the expected Lego gags in all cutscenes. These moments of humour always manage to provide a laugh in even the most serious of Star Wars moments which some could see as annoying or unfaithful given the history of the games and the game itself it doesn’t bother me as I’m not looking to this as an accurate to the t guide to the Star Wars cannon. Furthermore, along with these sight gags a new addition (for me specifically) is the addition of vocal comedy adding a unique spin on characters we know so well. Ben Solo especially gave me some laugh out loud moments with the duel against him in Episode 9 being the stand out where he effectively acts as an excited fanboy. So overall these comedic additions to the story are all positive in my eyes.
Presentation
Let's start firstly with the menus which while first appear nice but nothing spectacular but when in the episode select screen become really fun with small moving dioramas of moments from each respective episode. This unneeded detail just adds that extra bit of charm to the game and just makes selecting an episode that little bit more fun. The menus in gameplay whilst not as spectacular as the episode select are fast and responsive so no real complaints there. Whilst the new character selecting method did confuse me slightly at first when I learnt it, it became very handy for quickly switching to a class that I needed. The games itself looks great graphics wise with its realistic environments and the Lego characters within them also looking as good as they can be. Even with the Lego aesthetic for characters and some parts of the world the level of detail is better than any other Lego game I’ve seen before. From things like lighting effects being on par with any other current gen game to the way sand and snow particles build on the Lego characters themselves giving a real sense of a child playing with their toys in these environments. On the topic of the characters, the animation on them is top notch with each character having unique style of walking and fighting. In addition, each character is expressive with the nice addition of their mouths moving whilst speaking out of cutscenes which is nice to see. Now onto the sound department. Once again, no complaints, the music is great which is testament to not the game but John Williams and the actual movies of course however still great none the less with subtle music playing on each planet. In terms of sound effects, the detail is once again brilliant. Sounds of the surface the minifigure walks on can be distinctly heard with things like the crunch of snow under the characters feet. Also, things like blasters and lightsabres all sound as you expect them to which is great and of course differing lightsabres and blasters have unique sounds to them. The final aspect of sound is the voice actors who are doing a stellar job here. Whilst a few don’t sound greatly similar to their live action counterparts they put as much effort as them and you can tell that they’re having fun with their roles. Having the actors who played Anakin and Obi-wan in The Clone Wars as well was a great choice as they know these characters well and thus can put in a great performance with line delivery that they know their characters would make.
