3.5/5 ★ – JacccBlaccc's review of Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition.
Finished: Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
Platform: Playstation 5 Pro
Time: 6:17 Hours
Verdict: GOOD
Word:
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition might be the most colorful Metroidvania game Ive ever played.
It borrows elements of the Mexican folkslore to decorate its themes and topics through its playtime.
The Gameplay is SUPERB, it contents the usual elements from its peers, the SUPERB Platforming being the most outstanding one. It starts rather simple but gets more complex the more you progress - learning more abilities and skills which will open new pathways to new areas and locations.
The Puzzles are correlative with the aforementioned platforming. They are little and sparse and barely worth mentioning but is still SOLID overall.
The Combat is GOOD in its own rights. It features enough facets to maintain fun and engagement.
The Exploration leads you off the main path to the more challenging platform sections, which withhold mostly loot for upgrade purposes.
The Bosses are GOOD in quality but lacks the quantity to exceed that.
The Enemy Types on the other hand are the main menu in confrontations. From its good designs, movesets and very strong variations I consider it SUPERB.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition has some SUPERB Main Quest Designs. It is barley repetitive or dull. Little less can be said about the Side Content Design. It is GOOD still, but lacks the effort to be on par with the Main Quests.
The Upgrade Systems is widespread as a positive upgrade system has to be. Some upgrades are coupled with exploration and its nature to find loot to upgrade health, endurance and Intenso. Others is thru spending its currency at spawn points.
The Loot System is SOLID for the most part. Frankly in comparison to the field of the Metroidvania genre it is one of the weakest.
The Story is really UNDERWHELMING. Not worth mentioning at all. Its UNDERWHELMING PLOT is very dull and forgettable. Even worse is the Screenplay. A complete DISAPPOINTING experience.
The Characters are SOLID. Even though I sincerely wished itd had voice acting to underline the characteristics and uplift that criteria vehemently.
Non Voice Acting.
Dialogs and Texts are GOOD. It has some clever writing. Especially in its humor. It made me smile and giggle a handful of times.
For the game to feature Mexican folkslore as the World Building - a very rare folkslore in the gaming space, it is DISAPPOINTING in its execution. Could have, should have been much better.
The Level Designs are the showpiece to me. Very SUPERB. It links the abilities and skills you gain with its levels in harmony together.
Non CGI / Cut-Scenes.
The Graphics and the artstyle are suprisingly GOOD, especially considering its a 10 years old game, repackaged for the 8. Gen of Consoles. Neat surprise.
The same applies to the Animations. It is GOOD how the characters, bosses and enemy types come to life.
I didnt click with the OST at all unfortunately. Rather UNDERWHELMING to me.
The Audio Design though fulfilled its necessities. Very GOOD.
The Abilities are creative and attached to neat titles. Wherever in combat or traversal. Becoming a rooster to enter narrow passages is just genius.
The Humor, as mentioned above, is an Extra worth. Definitely amusing writing.
