Infamous Second Son is a game I had no expectations with. I have never played or seen much on these games and my knowledge of the story was very limited. Thanks to the PS Plus Collection however, I finally decided to take the plunge and give it a chance. What I got was a very solid sandbox game with a lot of humor and memorable characters, but it does have it's share of issues.
For one, this is a game where the main character unlocks quite a few super powers, and it's really a lot of fun to use them and experiment with the potential of all of them. The sad reality though, is that the enemy variety is largely non-existent. The number of unique enemies is in the single digits. You have your typical thug, the 4 different D.U.P officers, and only three unique boss fights throughout the entire. There is a 9th one but I don't want to spoil that for you. Only 9 different enemies doesn't make for much to work with.
The second problem is, there is barely a soundtrack in here. What little music is in the game, it starts and stops randomly. There's no rhyme or reason to it, it just plays and fades for no reason. The only time its consistent is during story missions.
Speaking of missions, they are all pretty fun to do. You have the really great story missions, as well as some pretty fun side missions that are completely optional. These range from finding undercover agents among other NPCs to finding voice recordings that can shed some light on certain story events surrounding all the characters. The problem is that... these missions repeat in every single district and you'll eventually be so used to them, that you'll clear an entire area in 30 minutes or less, including finding all the collectable upgrade shards. It's fun, but repetitive, so that might turn quite a few people off.
This game runs great (especially on PlayStation 5), and it looks really good too. I'm genuinely surprised with how good this game looks over 8 years later. It has a lot of color to it, something that not too many games from this era had. The animations are really well done, and all of your powers are bright and vibrant to help make them all feel distinct. It really brings a charm to a game like this that many sandbox games truly lack.
Overall, I think it's a fun playthrough, but not worth a revisit once it's done, in my opinion. The characters are all fun and quirky, and the humor between them all had me laughing at times. It never takes itself too seriously. The mission structure works, but I feel like this game would have been better if they focused on expanding the story instead of creating this sandbox to play around in and padding it out with side missions to make the game feel longer. It still holds up visually and I think it's a good showcase for what Game Boost can do on PS5.
