4.5/5 ★ – JasonLee's review of BioShock.

BioShock PS Now (October 21, 2008) Bio Shock 24 hours 35 minutes Another one of the many franchises I’ve heard a lot about but never played due to it never being on a Nintendo system. When it was announced for Switch, I began to research and put it on my wishlist. The genre, first person shooter, is not a genre I tend to like much. But my research indicated it was the environment and strong story that carried it more than anything. So I was willing to give it a try. However, before it released on Switch I ended up subscribing to PS Now for a year. The BioShock games were all included so I took it off my Switch wishlist and eagerly jumped in. The first hour or two was kind of rough as I tried to get acclimated with what exactly the game wanted me to to. I ended up dropping the difficulty to easy and that’s when the fun really started. I figured out how to use the magic in conjunction with the guns. I then figured out my powered up wrench was a very effective weapon and that became my main, along with either electricity or water. I enjoyed defeating the enemies in different ways. Should I enrage an enemy causing it to attack all other enemies? Should I hack a turret so it’s friendly to only me? Should I send electricity through a puddle of water on the floor? There are tons of ways to fight. The story and atmosphere did not disappoint. I genuinely wanted to know what was going to happen next. And that leads me to the disappointing part of this story, one that has nothing to do with the game itself. With PS Now you can download the available PS2 & PS4 games. The PS3 games are only available to stream. BioShock is a PS3 game so I had to stream. In the 20 hours I played this game the speed was wildly inconsistent. While it never ran like a normal game would, it was good enough to where I could play and enjoy it...most of the time. Unfortunately those other times were horrible. The game would sometimes just shut down if the speed wasn’t fast enough. Anytime that was about to occur you always get a warning so you can quickly save your game. The real problem is the game locked up 3 times while saving. Two of those times I lost significant progress. The first time I played through to make up the 3 hours I lost. The last time I said forget it. I was right at the end too. While I may demo a game through streaming, never again will I actually try to play through one. I even hardwired the PS4 and the speed wasn’t any different than it was through WiFi. But for BioShock itself, I plan to pick up the collection sometime and playing through this again, and actually finish it on normal difficulty. It’s that good. Update: Went back and finished the game through streaming. It was still painful to stream but the game was good enough I wanted to see it through.
