3.5/5 ★ – Jejo's review of Hyper Light Drifter.
Tbh I dont know how to feel about this game. Its has great gameplay, great traversing, great soundtrack, great bosses, great world, but overall It didn't "click" with me.
It is too abstract, in terms of story and artstyle, you only have room for interpretation, and I don't like too much abstract elements, but that is just my taste, If you like it, this game is perfect for you.
The storytelling is done a lot more through the world itself, it is full of detail, kinda like what the first bioshock does, but like I said, a lot of these are too abstract, so you might not know what really is going on.
3 complains though:
1. The map is really confusing, and the fact that it doesn't show your exact location doesn't really help
2. The soundtrack is too much "good vibes" (might be just my taste) and there isn't much variety in the songs most of the time (with the exceptions of this all being the bosses and cutscenes music), It feels like I've listened to the same music the entire game
3. This might be just a nitpick, but, due to the artstyle it seems that a lot of things just blend together, sometimes I can't have a sense of depth or know if something is a "wall" that I can't get through. It doesn't break my experience, but it is a little anoying
But overall, if you like more abstract things and a gameplay that is a small nod to the top-down 2D zelda games, just go for it
