4.5/5 ★ – Jesusvol's review of God of War: Ragnarök.
It has actually taken me a long time to write this review, because I beat this game almost a week ago, and since then my thoughts have wildly change, because God of War (2018) is most definitely a top 3 game for me, I absolutely love it and consider it a complete masterpiece, so of course I was dying to play Ragnarok, and I just have to say that it doesn't reach the same heights...
Don't get me wrong, the game is incredible, the performances were unreal, the game is beautiful, I love how much depth the villains got, which is something not a lot of videogames do nowadays, the main boss fights were a lot of fun and the story was honestly perfect. That sounds like the package for a 10/10 masterpiece right? I thought so too right after beating it, but after thinking about it, I just don't think it is for a couple of reasons.
There's the Atreus sections which were mostly fun but his gameplay just doesn't have the same depth as Kratos' and that whole section in Jottunheim with Angrboda? that was ass bro, just so so bad, a whole ass walking simulator in my God of War game, completely unacceptable. And then there's the gameplay, I don't think it was bad, there's certainly improvements over GOW 2018's gameplay but unlike that other game, I just got tired of fighting the same enemies in every realm, I may be misremembering but in the previous GOW there was more variety and there wasn't so many repeated boss fights against the same kind of enemies (I swear you fight like 7 Drekies in the game) also there were enemies that were just bullet sponges for artificial difficulty, and that always sucks.
So yeah that's about it, I really liked the game sure, it's amazing, but GOW 2018 was an unbelievable game, and this not reaching the same level is lowkey dissapointing, although a dissapointment being a 9/10 speaks volumes about how great these games are.
